Manta rays, those graceful giants of the ocean, have long been thought to flee the rough monsoon conditions, seeking refuge in calmer waters. But a recent study from the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia challenges this long-held belief. Researchers tagged 10 adult reef manta rays between 2016 and 2018, revealing a surprising behavior: most manta rays stay put, responding to changing ocean conditions by diving far deeper than previously thought. Two rays even descended to depths exceeding 1,300 feet, a feat that defies the conventional wisdom.
What's more fascinating is the reason behind this behavior. The study suggests that reef manta rays, which feed on zooplankton, adjust their diving behavior based on the availability of food. During the northwest monsoon, when surface productivity declines, prey is pushed deeper, forcing the manta rays to follow. Conversely, in the southeast monsoon, food remains closer to the surface, and the mantas do as well. This adaptability is crucial for their survival in a rapidly changing ocean.
The research also highlights the importance of location. The Samarai Islands, where the study was conducted, are situated within a Coral Sea upwelling zone, where colder water rises, maintaining productive local waters. This concentrated year-round use of the area provides valuable insights for conservation efforts. By understanding the manta rays' preferred habitats, conservationists can better protect these vulnerable species, especially in areas where bycatch from fisheries remains a threat.

As Anna Knochel, the lead author of the study, noted, "The data shows that the mantas expanded their vertical use of the water column rather than leaving the region to find prey."
