However, the state takeover has not been without controversy. Critics argue that it was a racially discriminatory action by conservative state lawmakers against a predominantly minority-led city. The ACLU of Texas, the Houston NAACP, and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice, claiming the move stripped voting power from communities of color. Despite the controversy, the state intervention has received praise from Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Abbott's press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, highlights the upward trajectory in math and reading test scores since the takeover. The state takeover is scheduled to continue until at least June 1, 2027, as per Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath.
